
Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Bru McCoy has announced his decision to medically retire from football, ending a remarkable journey marked by resilience, leadership, and community impact.
McCoy’s path to this point has been shaped by a series of challenges and triumphs that have left an indelible mark on the Tennessee football program.
McCoy’s tenure at Tennessee was characterized by his determination to overcome adversity. After transferring from Southern California, he quickly became a key contributor to the Volunteers’ offense.
However, his 2023 season was abruptly halted due to a severe ankle injury sustained during a game against South Carolina on September 30, 2023.
The injuryโa fracture-dislocation of his right ankleโrequired immediate surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
Despite the severity of the injury, McCoy’s commitment to recovery was unwavering. He underwent four surgeries over a span of ten days in the hospital, demonstrating remarkable perseverance throughout the process.
By the time the 2024 season commenced, McCoy had made a successful return to the field, showcasing his resilience and determination.

He was a member of Tennessee’s leadership council and served as a team captain, roles that underscored his commitment to his teammates and the program. Additionally, McCoy spearheaded the “Huddle for Hearts” initiative, collaborating with the Peyton Walker Foundation to provide Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to youth sports organizations, particularly in underserved communities .

In the 2024 season, McCoy led the team with 35 receptions and ranked second in receiving yards with 432, solidifying his role as a reliable target for the Volunteers’ quarterbacks.
