In a thrilling SEC Tournament quarterfinal matchup, the Tennessee Volunteers baseball team secured a dramatic 7-5 victory over the top-seeded Texas Longhorns in 12 innings, propelling them into the semifinals.
The game, held in Hoover, Alabama, showcased Tennessee’s resilience and depth, culminating in a pivotal performance by Gavin Klein.
Early Momentum Shifts
Texas initially dominated the game, establishing a 4-0 lead by the fourth inning. Ethan Mendoza’s two-run triple was a highlight of the Longhorns’ early offense.
Starting pitcher Ethan Walker kept Tennessee’s bats at bay, not allowing a run through the first four innings.
However, the momentum shifted in the middle innings.
A crucial error by Texas shortstop Jalin Floris in the fifth inning extended the frame, allowing Tennessee to capitalize and begin their comeback.

In the 12th inning, Klein delivered once again, this time with a two-run double off Dylan Volantis, propelling Tennessee to a 7-5 lead. Relievers Dylan Loy and Nate Snead then closed out the game, with Snead retiring the side in order in the bottom of the 12th to secure the victory.

This victory not only eliminated the top-seeded Longhorns but also underscored Tennessee’s depth and clutch performance under pressure. The Volunteers, now 48-11 on the season, will face the winner of the Auburn vs. Arkansas game in the SEC Tournament semifinals.
