In a heartbreaking incident on May 26, 2025, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office reported the death of 46-year-old Frederic Dross, an experienced backcountry skier from South Lake Tahoe. Dross had been reported missing after failing to return from a solo skiing trip near Powderhouse Peak, located near Luther Pass. His wife contacted authorities when he did not return as expected.
Search and rescue teams initiated efforts to locate Dross, but hazardous snow conditions delayed their operations. Using controlled explosives to mitigate avalanche risks, crews recovered his body on the afternoon of May 27. Dross was found wearing an avalanche transceiver, which enabled friends to locate him in the avalanche-prone area. Despite his preparedness and experience, the treacherous conditions proved fatal.
The incident has prompted officials to reiterate the importance of safety measures in backcountry skiing. They urge skiers to be aware of current snow conditions, carry essential safety equipment, and consider the risks associated with backcountry activities. Dross’s death serves as a somber reminder of the dangers inherent in such pursuits.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Dross’s family during this difficult time. The community has expressed an outpouring of support, honoring his memory and the joy he brought to those around him.
As investigations continue, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to Dross’s family and friends, emphasizing the tragic nature of this loss
