J.T. Barrett Joins the Chicago Bears as Quarterbacks Coach

The Chicago Bears have officially announced the hiring of J.T. Barrett as their new quarterbacks coach, marking a significant step in Barrett’s young coaching career.

For fans of college football, Barrett’s name is instantly recognizable—he was once the heart and soul of the Ohio State Buckeyes, leading them through some of the program’s most memorable seasons in the 2010s.

More recently, Barrett has been working his way up the coaching ladder, serving as the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions.

Now, he will bring his experience, leadership, and quarterback expertise to Chicago, tasked with helping guide the Bears’ signal-callers into the future.

From Ohio State Legend to Coach

Barrett’s football story is one of perseverance, intelligence, and leadership.

At Ohio State, he left an indelible mark on the program, starting from 2014 through 2017.

A four-year starter, Barrett compiled an impressive 38–6 record, setting numerous school and Big Ten Conference records in the process. Known for his poise, mobility, and decision-making, he threw for over 9,000 career yards and rushed for another 3,000, accounting for 147 total touchdowns. His resume remains one of the most decorated in Ohio State history, cementing him as one of the winningest quarterbacks in the school’s storied tradition.

But what truly set Barrett apart during his playing career was not only his statistical dominance but his ability to lead under pressure.

He was often praised for his football IQ, maturity, and calm demeanor, qualities that naturally translate to the coaching world.

While his path to becoming a pro player didn’t unfold as smoothly—spending brief stints with NFL teams like the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and Pittsburgh Steelers—his transition into coaching has been both natural and promising.

Early Coaching Experience in Detroit

After his playing career wound down, Barrett pivoted to coaching, where his skill set seemed destined to shine.

In 2022, he joined the Detroit Lions as an offensive assistant, primarily working with quarterbacks.

The Lions, under head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, became one of the most explosive and balanced offenses in the NFL, led by quarterback Jared Goff.

Barrett’s role as assistant quarterbacks coach allowed him to gain firsthand experience in helping Goff refine his mechanics, decision-making, and overall confidence.

The Lions’ success during Barrett’s tenure is not to be overlooked.
