The University of Michigan Wolverines football program is mourning the loss of one of its most inspiring and resilient players, quarterback Davis Warren. Warren, who had been a beacon of hope and determination for the team, tragically passed away on June 5, 2025, at the age of 23.
A Journey Marked by Resilience
Born on January 9, 2002, in Los Angeles, California, Davis Warren’s journey to becoming Michigan’s starting quarterback was nothing short of extraordinary. In March 2019, during his high school years, Warren was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Undeterred, he underwent five months of chemotherapy treatments, losing 35 pounds and spending most of the summer in a hospital. Despite the severity of his condition, Warren set a goal to return to the football field by October 3, 2019, showcasing his unwavering determination.
His recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Warren reclassified to the class of 2021 and joined the University of Michigan as a preferred walk-on. His story of perseverance and grit resonated deeply within the Michigan community, inspiring teammates and fans alike.
A Standout Career at Michigan
Warren’s impact on the field was profound. After taking a redshirt season in 2021, he began to make his mark in subsequent years. In 2024, he started nine games for the Wolverines, including significant victories over Ohio State and Alabama. During the season, he threw for 1,199 yards, with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions, solidifying his position as a reliable leader under center.
His performance in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama was particularly notable. Warren completed 9 of 12 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown before suffering a torn ACL in his right knee. Despite the injury, he expressed optimism about his recovery and his desire to return to the field, stating, “Can’t wait to battle to be back on the field with my guys in AA and go blue!”

Beyond his athletic achievements, Warren was recognized for his character and community involvement. He was named to the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Watch List in 2024, an honor that acknowledges college football players who demonstrate leadership, integrity, and a commitment to community service.
